ATAOHN Spotlight on Members

Ever wonder . . .? Would you like to get to know some of your colleagues better? Each month, ATAOHN will help by “shining the spotlight” on one of our members and who knows? You could be next!

April (Bitsy Eichler) - May (Bonnie Heinrich) - September (Peg Malatesta) - October (Sandy Bruskewitz)

April 2009

Bitsy Eichler

Name: Bitsy Eichler

Job Title: Occupational Health Supervisor

Employer: 3M

Certifications: COHN/CM, CPR

Degrees: MSN/MBA/Health Care Management, RN, Licensed Paramedic

  • In what ways has the AAOHN membership been valuable to you?
It has provided me with means to meet and network with other occupational health nurses in the Austin area, and have a resource in nurses who have similar circumstances as myself in my job. I have been provided continuing education opportunities, and the journal that we receive is invaluable.

  • What is your favorite member benefit and why?
Meeting and networking with other occupational health nurses. A job as an OHN can be a very lonely job, and many of us do not have corporate guidance. Learning what others are doing has been very valuable in helping me in my job.

  • Why would you encourage other Occupational Health nurses to join AAOHN?
It provides the opportunity to be a member of a professional organization (always good on a resume!), network with other OHNs, and maintain CE’s, and what’s the latest going on in the world of OHNs. It gives me a personal feeling of belonging.

  • Where do you work and what programs do you manage?
I work for 3M at a research and development facility. I do many different programs including WC, disability management, first responders, international travel

  • What is one thing you love about occupational health nursing?
Autonomy and the self-gratification of knowing people are better off when they walk out of my office than when they came in

  • Favorite activity outside of work:
Not just one! Camping, gardening, and horseback riding, caring for my animals. Grandkids!

  • Favorite movie:
Sister Act and Dirty Dancing – I watch them both every time I find them on TV!

  • Favorite band/musician:
Several, I like a variety of music. And to my surprise, I loved going to a Yanni concert several years ago.

  • I maintain my work/life balance by. . .insisting on some down time on a regular basis, ensuring that I regularly see my kids/grandkids, and family, and do some activities that de-stress me such as gardening, caring for my animals ( I talk to them like they are people, and I’m sure they understand) and making sure when it is time, to take a day off of work. I think it is important to understand not to sweat the small stuff, pick my battles, and let go of what I don’t have control over.

  • Store you would max your credit card at (if you could):
There are several, but I could spend a lot at most any clothing store, camping store, or children’s store for my grandkids.

  • Sometime in my life, I would like to. . .retire and travel more!

  • It would surprise most people that I. . .love to stay in the kitchen, can veggies, and cook/entertain for many!

Please provide a personal quote to illustrate the positive impact the organization has had on you:
The organization has given me the opportunity to grow personally and professionally while meeting and interacting with a wonderful group of OHN’s.

Bonnie Heinrich

Name: Bonnie Heinrich

Job Title: Sr. Occupational Health Nurse

Employer: URS Corporation

  • In what ways has the AAOHN membership been valuable to you?
The networking available with other Occupational Health Nurses is invaluable. The speakers that are scheduled to present at each meeting always bring with them information that is relevant for my practice and informative with new studies, practice guidelines, etc.
  • What is your favorite member benefit and why?
Being an ATAOHN member also includes a membership to the AAOHN, so the networking opportunities are endless.
  • Why would you encourage other Occupational Health nurses to join AAOHN?
Being a member allows you to keep your practice up to date with the new medical treatments, recommendations. It also keeps you informed of new regulations within our practice. If you want to be a leading Occupational Health Nurse, joining AAOHN is a huge step in the right direction.
  • Where do you work and what programs do you manage?
I work for URS Corporation. We are a global company that has many governmental contracts that support the military efforts. We have sites on many of the
military bases around the world. I am responsible for over 260 of those sites. I manage the worker’s compensation program, the medical surveillance program, provide support to human resources for personal medical return to work issues, review return to work compliance for those working in the war zones, among a variety of other responsibilities. There is never a dull moment (nor a silent phone it seems like)!
  • What is one thing you love about occupational health nursing?
I love the autonomy of nursing in Occupational Health Nursing. There are so many aspects from educating the employees, to working with other departments to instrumentally meet the needs of the workforce in a time they are most vulnerable and need guidance.
  • Favorite activity outside of work
I love to quilt (thought I spend very little time at it these days). I also love to work in my flower beds and enjoy the fruits of my labor as the beautiful flowers
    bloom.
  • Favorite movie: Stepmother
  • Favorite band/musician: Chris Tomlin (contemporary Christian artist)
  • I maintain my work/life balance by . . . that is a difficult one. It takes practice every day. I am working hard to make sure I spend quality time with my    family.
  • Store you would max your credit card at (if you could): Kohl’s
  • Sometime in my life, I would like to . . . travel to the east coast of the US during the fall to watch the leaves change colors. I would also like to spend New Year’s eve in Australia.
  • It would surprise most people that I . . . have traveled to Dubai, Iraq and Kuwait.

Please provide a personal quote to illustrate the positive impact the organization has had on you:
Being connected to other Occupational Health Nurses through the ATAOHN has allowed me to gain confidence in my profession and to tap in to valuable resources.
